Holidaymakers are being urged to shop around for the best possible currency exchange rate as it emerged they could be at least £20 better off when swapping £500 for euros. Financial research group Consumer Intelligence said people who change £500 for euros with Moneycorp will receive €690.90, but the same amount of cash swapped for euros with Halifax would see them getting just €662.06 - a £20.53 difference at today's exchange rate. However, Consumer Intelligence (CI) says a good exchange rate isn't the be all and end all for holidaymakers, as the three most popular places to buy currency - Post Office, Travelex and Tesco - do not offer the best rates. The Post Office is the most popular provider, yet is only 12th for value in CI's exchange rate analysis - paying €10.90 less than Moneycorp when converting £500. Conversely, Moneycorp, which offers the best value, is ranked ninth for popularity. FairFx, which is second-best for value comes one place higher than Moneycorp at eighth in the popularity contest, while third-place for value was Ramsdens - which swaps £500 for €689 - which is a lowly 19th place for popularity. The top three currency companies for value are less well known to the public and Consumer Intelligence found that Moneycorp's lack of high street presence may put customers off. The company does, however, operate bureaux de change in Central London as well as airports including Bristol Airport, Gatwick, Stansted, Southampton and Southend Airports and it operates a free next-day home delivery service on orders of £500 or more. Ian Hughes, chief executive of Consumer Intelligence, said: "We need to shop around for travel money just as much as we do for car insurance or mortgages or we will lose out. People think that the price of a euro is fixed, it isn't - different people sell it for different prices. "The issue appears to be that many people like to buy travel money in a branch and get the cash in their hands rather than over the internet. Moneycorp provides an airport collection service but doesn't have the national coverage. "It makes sense wherever possible however to look for the best rate. People who really do prefer branches should look at Asda, Tesco, Ramsdens or Thomas Cook. And if you insist on a bank then it should be HSBC." Consumer Intelligence points out that some companies charge fees such as charges for paying by credit card (Moneycorp charge 1.95%). Some firms charge for home delivery too. Moneycorp charges between £5 and £18.50 for amounts less than £500 depending on delivery time, while Money Shop charges £3.99, Thomson £2.95, Lloyds £4.50 and Halifax £5.

EU mobile roaming charges to end in June 2017

Roaming charges for mobile phone users will end by June 2017, the European Commission (EC) has announced, putting to an end 'bill shock' experienced by European holidaymakers who use the internet too much (or accidentally) while abroad. From June 2017, mobile phone users travelling in the EU will pay the same price as at home, with no extra charges. This means they will be able to call a friend in another EU country, download movies or use the likes of Google Maps while out and about - and it won't make a difference on their bill (provided they have a data allowance as part of their tariff and don't go over it). However, the European Commission said that in order to abolish roaming charges, "a series of technical conditions will have to be fulfilled", which is why the agreement will take two years to be introduced. The EC has long been trying to scrap mobile roaming fees, but has until now only managed to reduce them. For example, rules that capped mobile roaming fees across the EU were introduced on 1 July 2014, taking the maximum charge for downloading data from 45 cents to 20 cents (around 16p) a megabyte; outgoing calls drop from 24 cents to 19 cents a minute; outgoing texts fall from 8 cents to 6 cents a text; and incoming voice calls now cost 5 cents instead of 7 cents a minute. Those efforts have meant that prices for roaming calls, text messages and data have fallen by 80% since 2007. The EC also announced that strong 'net neutrality rules' that protect the right of every European to access internet content without discrimination will also be introduced. They will guarantee that users will be able to access content of their choice and will not be unfairly blocked or slowed down anymore. Andrus Ansip, commission vice-president for the EC's Digital Single Market, said: "Europeans have been calling and waiting for the end of roaming charges as well as for net neutrality rules. They have been heard. "We still have a lot of work ahead of us to create a Digital Single Market. Our plans to make it happen were fully endorsed by heads of state and government last week, and we should move faster than ever on this." Consumers should remember that the current roaming caps (and the proposed scrapping of fees from June 2017) only apply to mobile use within the nations of the European Union, meaning holidaymakers who travel further afield still face the prospect of a sizeable bill.

Retirees have been warned once again about pension scams after a financial adviser found that one in five over-50s may have been targeted by fraudsters looking to trick them out of their savings. The survey, conducted by YouGov on behalf of Retirement Advantage (formerly MGM Advantage), found that 17% of over-50s and 20% of over-55s have been approached by a company offering to help them access their pension early. Most had been contacted by phone (50%), while a quarter (24%) were targeted by mail and a further 23% by email. The scammers promise their victims they can unlock a pension early by using some kind of legal loophole or a one-off investment opportunity. Andrew Tully, pensions technical director at Retirement Advantage, said: "It is clear that there are already scammers preying on people who might like the idea of using the new pension freedoms to take large amounts of cash from their pension schemes. "The scammers may be offering 'get rich quick' schemes or even early access before age 55 to trick people out of their hard-earned savings. Retirees need to be on their guard: if an opportunity sounds too good to be true, it almost certainly is." Tully said the government and the financial services industry must work together to help protect consumers, adding that the government must be more proactive in seeking our criminals and prosecuting them. To help retirees feel equipped to deal with potential scammers Retirement Advantage is highlighting five key things to be alert for: 1. An offer to help you access your pension savings before age 55. It is only possible to do this in rare situations, for instance if you are very ill, so be careful and always check with your pension provider. 2. A recommendation to take a large amount of money, or your whole pension pot, in a lump sum and invest it. There are significant tax implications if you take lots of your savings in one go, so check the tax position before you make any decisions. 3. Warnings that the deal is limited and you must act now. Choosing the right retirement income product(s) is a big decision and shouldn't be done quickly or under pressure. 4. An encouragement not to get professional financial advice or talk to Pension Wise. An adviser would be able to explain the rules and tax implications of different options and help you make the best choices for your personal circumstances, so be very suspicious if this is discouraged. 5. Contact by somebody who is not on the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) Register. The Register is a public record of all the regulated firms and individuals in the financial services industry, including retirement income providers and investment companies.
