Merck has done some dramatic things in antibiotics lately. Six months ago, it bought Lexington, Mass.-based Cubist Pharmaceuticals, a leader in the field, for $8.4 billion. Then it laid off a ton of people there. Now it’s joining a $30 million investment in a little company with new ideas for fighting some of the “superbugs.”
