Amazon Is Increasing the Cost of Prime for the First Time in Four Years


It all started in 2005 with free two-day shipping.

Since then, Amazon Prime has evolved into the preeminent paid subscription service, with over 100 million members getting access to popular TV series, movies and music, select free Kindle books and free shipping that now includes two-hour delivery.

Prime is one of those things that people make fit into their budgets because it’s a good deal. But now you might have to give up a trip to The Sizzler to afford the luxury.

Starting May 11, Amazon is increasing the price of Prime membership from $99 per year to $119.

Prime renewals will follow the price increase beginning June 16.

Regular and student monthly memberships will continue to be $12.99 and $6.49 per month, respectively. The annual student membership will increase to $59 per year.

No change has been announced to increase the price on discounted memberships for Medicaid recipients.

It’s been four years since Prime’s last $20 price hike from $79, shortly after which Amazon introduced Prime Music.

What’s to come for Amazon Prime members is yet to be fully revealed but there are a few things we know.

Whole Foods is eliminating its rewards program beginning May 1 in favor of a program integrated with Prime. And Amazon has acquired rights to stream two years of the NFL’s Thursday Night Football games for a cool $130 million – a perk that will only be available to Prime members.

If you’re not a Prime member and won’t be ready to pull the trigger before May 11, you can still ask your mom for a digital gift card for a year of Prime and pay her $99 back later.

Asian-American Students: Apply by May 7 for Scholarships up to $5K


Nonprofit organization Against The Grain is awarding a series of scholarships to Asian-American high school seniors, college undergraduates and graduate school students across the country.

Against The Grain has already awarded 30 scholarships since 2011 to students pursuing degrees in fashion and graphic design, entrepreneurship, visual arts, journalism and more.

This year, applicants can choose one of four scholarship opportunities based on their college major. Award money ranges between $1,000 and $5,000, depending on which one you select.   

The application window is open now, but don’t delay. The deadline is May 7, 2018.

This New Lone Star State Law Is Putting the Brakes on Exorbitant Toll Fees


If you’ve racked up late fees for unpaid tolls driving on state roads in Texas over the past decade, here’s some good news.

The Texas Department of Transportation will waive about $1.3 billion in unpaid late fees, KXAN-TV reported.

The state will forgive fees accumulated between 2007 and March 1, 2018, when a law went into effect capping the fees at $48 per year.

Under the new law, the Texas Department of Transportation will now assess late fees of just $4 per month for drivers who have failed to pay tolls.

The fee forgiveness and new fee structure apply only to toll roads managed by the state transportation department.

KXAN-TV also reported drivers were previously fined $25 for each toll violation. Last year, toll violators collectively paid $21.7 million in late fees. In just the first two months of this year, they paid an additional $2.1 million.

The news station reported it could take weeks for the Texas Department of Transportation to clear all the old late-fee balances from drivers’ statements. Those who’ve previously paid their late fees won’t get their money refunded.

How to Create Highly Relevant Content That Directly Drives Sales

Content marketing is an absolute necessity for brand survival in 2018.

So you’re on the right track if you are currently creating and distributing content. But for those of you who aren’t seeing results from these marketing campaigns, it can be frustrating.

You’re putting so much time and effort into this, so why aren’t you seeing results? What’s the issue?

I see this problem a lot when I’m consulting with businesses. They don’t have a clearly defined content strategy. If this sounds like you, it’s important that you read carefully.

It’s great that you are continuing to publish new content. But this isn’t effective if your sales aren’t increasing.

Sure, content marketing can be used for lots of different things. Primarily, businesses use content marketing to:

  • generate leads
  • acquire new customers
  • increase brand awareness
  • establish credibility
  • engage with an audience

All of these are great and critical for success. However, you need to learn how to create content that directly drives sales.

That’s why you got into business in the first place, right? You wanted to make money. I can sum up one of the best ways to create content that drives sales in just one word.

Relevancy.

If your content isn’t relevant, you won’t see high conversions. It’s that simple. So follow this guide on how to drive sales with highly relevant content. Here’s what you need to know.

Understand how the conversion funnel works

Before you can create highly relevant content, it’s important for you to make sure that you’ve got a firm grasp on the conversion funnel.

You’ll see different variations of this funnel depending on which marketing website or expert you are referring to. It can also look slightly different depending on the industry and business model.

But for the most part, the conversion funnel can be broken down into three stages.

The top of the funnel occurs when a prospective customer becomes aware of your company. They’re conducting research or looking for an opinion. Basically, they need an answer to something and they are seeking insight.

Once a consumer knows that your brand exists, they enter the middle stage of the conversion funnel. This is the evaluation phase.

They are still conducting research, but now they are taking it one step further. Consumers are trying to decide if your product or service fits well for them and their specific needs.

Finally, the consumer reaches the bottom of the funnel when they enter the purchasing or conversion stage.

This is the area of the conversion funnel that you need to focus on the most when it comes to creating highly relevant content.

The bottom of the funnel is your chance to explain to your customers why your product and service is the best for them. Show your differentiation from the competition.

Educate the consumer. Explain what it will be like for them if they become a customer.

Marketing campaigns that entice them can include demonstrations, free consultations, free trials, estimates, quotes, coupons, and pricing. Basically, it’s anything to give them an incentive to buy.

Once you understand the conversion funnel, and more specifically, the bottom of the funnel, it will be much easier for you to adjust your content strategy accordingly to drive sales.

It doesn’t matter whether you are a B2C or B2B company, you’ll still need to evaluate your funnel.

Yes, you’ll notice some slight differences between the business models.

But ultimately, the funnel can still be broken down into three stages.

Create a customer journey map

Journey maps are a great resource because it takes you through the buying process even further than the conversion funnel.

Your journey map will focus on elements that take place after the purchase, instead of just before. So while awareness and consideration will still be part of your journey map, you’ll also focus on your customer retention strategy.

Analyze how the customer behaves after their initial purchase. This is very important when it comes to driving sales.

That’s because you’re not always going to focus all of your efforts on how to acquire new customers.

In fact, you shouldn’t be. Yes, of course, new customers are great. But it’s actually less expensive and more effective to target your current customers. So a journey map can help you accomplish this.

You’ll put yourself in the minds of your customers. Once you’re able to do this effectively, you can adjust your content strategy accordingly based on their point of view.

Track leads and conversions

Where are your leads coming from?

If you don’t know the answer to this question, it’s a big problem. This is one of the reasons why your content isn’t relevant and driving sales.

Knowing how customers discovered you can help you understand why they made a purchase. Based on this information, you can create content that’s more specific to their needs.

Since the majority of the customer journey is done on the Internet, it’s easy for you to track their behavior.

The best way to track your leads is with UTM parameters.

Not sure what a UTM parameter is? Don’t worry, it’s actually pretty simple. In fact, I’m sure you’ve seen this before.

If you’ve ever clicked on a link from an advertisement, the URL will be long and somewhat complex looking. Even if you’re just on a company homepage.

That’s a UTM parameter. It’s a way for websites to determine exactly where a lead came from. For example, did it come from Facebook, Twitter, Google Ads, a social influencer, or email marketing campaign?

You’ll have different tags for each distribution platform to know precisely where the lead came from.

Furthermore, you’ll have tags for each post within a specific platform. So for example, knowing it came from Facebook is great. But where on Facebook? Which specific post?

You’ll be able to figure this out with your UTM parameters. It’s easy to set these up with Google Analytics.

Just navigate to the “Demos & Tools” menu and select “Campaign URL Builder” from the list of options.

Another reason why UTM parameters are so important is because it can help you accurately measure your ROI.

You know how much you’re spending on each campaign, so you’ll be able to see direct sales results to measure how successful everything was.

Just make sure that you accurately fill out the entire form so you don’t get confused.

After you fill out the required fields, this tool will automatically generate a custom URL for you to use.

Promote diverse ads on social media

Now it’s time to take this process one step further. I’ve explained what you need to know about UTM parameters, but now you’ve got to put them to the test.

Social media is a great place to do this because you’ve got lots of options.

You can use paid promotions to target specific audiences. So you’ve just got to come up with ads that use different types of content.

Start with a hypothesis. What types of content do you think will have the highest conversions?

This will vary based on your industry, business model, target market, and other factors. But you need to make sure that each campaign is different.

Don’t get me wrong. You definitely don’t want to waste money on irrelevant ads. But it’s important that you rule out content that doesn’t work early on. Remember, we’re focusing on relevancy here.

Then you’ll use the UTM parameters that you’ve previously set up to track how effective different ads were.

Now you can appropriately adjust your content strategy based on which ads had the highest success rates and directly drove sales.

Develop a customer persona

Now that you know which content speaks to your audience the most, you can develop a customer persona to improve your conversion rates.

This will help you learn more about exactly who you’re selling to. It’s similar to what we did earlier with the journey map, but a customer persona has much greater detail involved.

Again, based on your findings, you’ll continue to adjust your content strategy.

Look at the factors associated with who you’re selling to.

It’s much more specific to your broader target market.

That’s why you won’t just develop one customer persona, you’ll be building several of these.

Each one depends on lots of different factors. But ultimately, customer personas will give you more inspiration so that you can stay relevant with your content strategy.

Take advantage of different formats of content

Don’t just stick with one type of content. Mix it up.

Some different strategies to consider include:

  • blogging
  • infographics
  • case studies
  • video content

This will vary depending on the platform you’re using and the audience that you’re trying to target.

But based on the research that you’ve conducted between your conversion funnel, customer journey map, UTM parameter tracking, and customer personas, you’ll have plenty of information to use for each type of content.

The best type of content is personalized. You can even use tricks like storytelling to enhance your content. These tips will ultimately lead to more sales.

Research shows that generating traffic and leads are the top marketing obstacles that businesses are struggling to overcome.

But by diversifying your content strategy, you’ll increase the chances of your content appealing to a wider audience.

That’s because it will be relevant based on their wants and needs.

Keep up with the latest news and trends

To stay relevant, you need to always keep your finger on the pulse.

Understand what’s happening locally, regionally, nationally, and across the globe. Keep your eye on important news.

You’ve also got to keep track of news and trends within your specific industry. Analyze your competition. Did someone else beat you to the punch?

If a competitor is having success with a strategy, you need to know about it. So find some accurate news sources. Subscribe to industry newsletters and attend events.

Whenever something major is happening that’s trending, you can use it to promote your content.

For example, do you remember the ALS ice bucket challenge craze of 2014?

If you were manufacturing buckets or selling ice, you could use that as a marketing ploy for your content strategy. Even if you were selling bathing suits, goggles, or anything similar, you could get creative here.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying you should try to take advantage charities. I’m just trying to show how you can capitalize on trends and other newsworthy headlines.

Just be creative and apply it to your content strategy.

Conclusion

You need to make sure that your content is relevant if you want to generate sales.

Figure out how to leverage different elements at the bottom of the conversion funnel. Then, create a customer journey map to help give you a better understanding of what the consumer wants.

Use UTM parameters to track their behavior and measure the success of different campaigns. Promote those ads on social media.

Once you realize which promotions had the most success, you can build customer personas to dig even deeper into the minds of your customers.

Use all of these resources, tools, and analytics to identify the type of content that speaks to your customers the most. Adjust your content strategy accordingly.

Money Free Days

One of our family’s favorite ways to spend money is to have money free weekends. We simply aim to go through an entire weekend without spending money, relying solely on the food already in our cupboard and refrigerator for our food needs and the things we already have on hand for our entertainment needs.

Over the last several months, I’ve come to realize that “money free days” are actually a really big part of our financial strategy. There are simply a lot of days where I don’t spend a dime, neither does Sarah, nor do any of our children.

We don’t go out to eat. We don’t stop for a quick treat. We don’t buy anything online. We don’t spend money on entertainment. We don’t buy food. We don’t buy anything. No money leaves our home.

So, starting in January, I started tracking those “money free days.” I just made up a little spreadsheet that was just a list of days, and each day where I didn’t believe we spent any money, I made a little “X.” It turns out that more than half of our days are money free days.

Here are a few observations about this:

Money free days are mostly achieved through self control regarding splurges and unnecessary spending. Our necessary and planned spending usually occurs in large batches on single days, like grocery day when I’ll also often fill up the car with gas, or bill pay day. Most other days do not have any planned spending at all, so a “money free day” usually happens because we didn’t splurge or buy anything unnecessary. A “money free day” is usually just a “self control day.”

Money free days really add up. If we spent just $10 per day on those money free days this year instead of $0, we would have spent $630 at last count. That $630 is enough to make a huge difference in the finances of most people. It covers a couple of car payments or pays off a credit card. If you have 50% “money free days” over the course of a year, that’s 182 money free days, and at $10 a pop, that’s $1,820.

Money free days work because we make a lot of our own meals. On money free days, we make our own meals at home from stuff we already have on hand. We don’t go to restaurants or get takeout or get delivery or make a last-minute run to the store. Instead, we’ve planned ahead with a well-considered meal plan.

Money free days also work because we have a lot of free things we enjoy doing and sources of entertainment and fun already on hand. We don’t need to go out and spend money to have an enjoyable day or evening. Here’s a list of 103 things we do on money free weekends, for example, and those tactics just scratch the surface.

Having a “money free day” becomes a nice little goal that feels like a nice accomplishment at the end of the day. At the end of a money free day, it really can feel like you’ve taken a real step forward in your financial life. Not only have you conserved money for the day, you’ve reinforced to yourself that you don’t need to spend money to have a joyous life. You can go to bed feeling good.

Yet, a money free day isn’t actually unpleasant. It’s usually a pretty normal day. We just don’t buy anything. We’ll have family meals together, work on hobbies together, take care of household projects, work, go to school, and so on.

When you start tracking “money free days” and get a streak of them going, you really want to keep it going. I’ve found that when I get three or four Xs in a row in my spreadsheet, I want to continue that streak and add another day to it. It’s an unconscious drive, but a powerful one. It’s a technique I’ve described in the past that can show up again and again.

“Money free days” cause you to spread out treats and thus appreciate them more. If you try to do three or four money free days a week, those are days that you’re not indulging in perks that might become utterly routine. You’re not stopping for a quick bite. You’re not grabbing a cup of super sweet coffee. You’re not stopping in at your favorite shop. Instead, you’re spreading out those perks. They’re not an everyday thing any more. Instead, they become more infrequent, and thus more special and more appreciated. That type of appreciation has value – the anticipation is fun and the less frequent indulgence makes it feel more pleasurable, too.

How can you turn this idea of “money free days” into something useful for you?

One thing you can do is turn it into a 30 day challenge. A thirty day challenge means that for a single thirty day period (I almost always just use a calendar month), you strive to make some significant change in your life or do something frequently. I often track this by using a calendar page, marking each successful day with an X – you can print calendar pages quite easily. Set a goal for that 30 day challenge – maybe it’s 20 Xs. At the start of each day, look at the calendar and reflect on your challenge. At the end of each day, look at that calendar and add a big fat X on that date if you succeed. See if you can get to 20 Xs before the end of the month.

Another good tactic is to reflect on things you’d like to do or get done with the things you already have on hand. What hobbies have you allowed to idle? What things do you have stowed away in your closet that you’ve neglected? What unread books do you have? Have you gone on a bike ride lately? Have you played soccer at the park lately? Gone for a long walk or a jog? Have you cooked up some of the things stowed away in the back of the freezer? Do some brainstorming about the dangling threads in your life, pleasurable or otherwise, and then intentionally spend days (or whole weekends) tugging on those threads.

I actually like using some of my money-free days to tackle big day-long projects. I’ll do things like doing a meal prep day or taking on a home repair project using things I already have on hand, or play an epic board game with my family. If I have all of my supplies on hand, this easily becomes a money free day.

Another good strategy is to plan a social event at your home. Have a dinner party or a movie night or a board game night. Plan it out several days in advance, get all of the stuff you need, and invite people over for the event. Getting ready for it will probably eat a lot of your day, then the event itself will fill your late afternoon and evening with free fun.

I find that doing anything free with friends tends to be a lot of fun, whether it’s going on a hike or having a dinner party or playing soccer at the park or going to a community concert. The simple act of doing something with someone is fun, and it turns out that lots of people are very amenable to social activities where there’s no cost to them. A lot of my friends might balk at the cost of a night on the town but love to come over for a game night or a movie night or to work on a project of some kind together.

A final tip: meal planning really, really helps with this. Having a meal planning and grocery buying plan in place makes money free days really easy because you already have the food you need on hand to prepare meals for the day (and for a lot of other days). If you have a strong meal planning system, you can often go for a week and a half or more without going to the grocery store, which eliminates one common source of spending. This entire process really cuts down on your food spending overall and paves the way for money free days, which inherently represent lower spending in other areas (such as hobbies). I often plan ahead with filling up the car with gas in this way, too, as I’ll often get gas at the same time as I shop for groceries.

Top tips on beating unfair private parking tickets

If you’ve ever received a parking ticket when you’ve parked legitimately on privately owned land, you’ll know how irritated it makes you feel. But rather than reluctantly pay up, you could challenge an unfair ticket and have it quashed. We look at the options.

There are few things more likely to outrage a motorist than an unjust parking ticket. What is more, it appears that drivers in the UK are increasingly being asked to cough up. New analysis of DVLA data by the RAC Foundation reveals that in the 2017/18 financial year a record number of private parking tickets had been issued. The DVLA released 5.65 million vehicle keeper records to car parking management companies last year. Almost all of these will have been used by private parking firms to issue motorists with tickets – up from 4.7 million in the year before.

The problem is that significant numbers of these tickets are being issued incorrectly. It has got sufficiently bad that even the government has stepped in. In January, the Department for Communities and Local Government promised new legal protections from “unscrupulous parking operators”, which are currently being scrutinised by Parliament.

So what are your rights when it comes to challenging a ticket that you think is unfair?

When can you appeal against a parking ticket?

There are plenty of entirely justifiable reasons for challenging a parking ticket. These might include:

  • A lack of clear signage explaining the parking rules for that spot
  • The fine is disproportionate to the cost of parking or any losses the landowner has incurred
  • You were unable to purchase a pay and display ticket as the machine was out of order
  • The parking company was not actually responsible for overseeing the land on which you parked
  • The parking ticket is invalid, perhaps because details have been recorded incorrectly
  • It was an emergency or your vehicle had broken down

Council ticket vs private ticket: how can I tell the difference?

There are two types of parking ticket, depending on who owns the land on which you parked.
If you get a ticket on a council-owned space, then you’ll be issued with a penalty charge notice or excess charge notice.

But if you are issued a ticket on privately owned land, then it will be a parking charge notice. There’s no recent data available on the average fee charged by private parking companies, but research carried out by Citizens Advice in 2015 placed this figure at £83. However, it reported that some have been hit with fines as high as £300.

The ticket itself should explain who it has been issued by and, therefore, what type of ticket it is. This is important, as the appeals process differs between a private parking ticket and one issued by local council.

Get evidence

If you plan to contest a ticket, then you will need to provide evidence to demonstrate precisely why you shouldn’t have to pay it.

So if there isn’t clear signage, you need to prove it. Take some photographs of the area around the parking space to show the absence of signage. Similarly, if a pay and display machine is broken, take pictures of it to demonstrate why you were unable to purchase a ticket.

Ryan Jackson, founder of parking management firm Gemini Parking Solutions, says: “A picture paints a thousand words, and could prove vital in your appeal case. Whether your grounds for appeal is because of insufficient signage or an unseen ticket or permit, always take a photo to corroborate your claim as an operator will have to review its photo evidence according to what you have provided.”

Is the company registered?

It’s important to check at an early stage whether the parking company is a registered member of an accredited trade association. You can do this on the websites of the British Parking Association (BPA) at BritishParkingAssociation.co.uk or International Parking Community (IPC) at Theipc.info.

This matters because firms that aren’t members of accredited trade associations are not able to get your details from the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency), which means they can’t take you to court if you don’t pay.

As a result, if you do get a ticket from a non-accredited firm and feel the need to let off steam, don’t write in to complain – you’ll be handing the company the personal details it needs to pursue you.

Also, be careful of ‘ghosting’, where a ticket is not physically issued, but a demand and a charge is.

Martyn James of complaints website Resolver says the site has started to hear more of these cases. He adds: “What’s particularly worrying is when we hear about blatantly dishonest tickets. Though no one knows how widespread the practice is, any examples of this are absolutely unacceptable and should be appealed even if you’ve decided to pay.”

Don’t pay up

Generally, with a parking ticket you can cut the cost of the fine by 50% if you pay up in the first 14 days.

You might be tempted to pay up first and then go through with the appeal. But this can be seen as a recognition of being at fault and damage the chances of your appeal being successful.

Speak to the landowner

When you are issued a ticket, it will come from the parking firm that has been employed to oversee that particular bay. But the firm isn’t the landowner – the space may be owned by a retailer or business. So if you think you’ve been treated unfairly, it’s worth speaking to the landowner directly.

Put it all in writing

Once you have the evidence you need, it’s time to put that complaint in writing. The ticket you were issued should have the parking firm’s contact details on there.

You can do this independently or you could use Resolver, a free online tool for complaints and claims, which will help you with your complaint form and ensure that you get a timely response.

If at first you don’t succeed…

If your initial appeal is unsuccessful, you can take your case to an independent arbiter. If the parking firm is a member of the BPA, then your case should be raised with Parking on Private Land Appeals (POPLA). This service is free to use and you have 28 days in which to do so after your initial complaint is rejected.

According to POPLA’s 2017 report, it upheld more than half of the almost 58,000 complaints it received.

If the parking firm is a member of the IPC, then you need to take your case to the Independent Appeals Service. Again, this service is free to use, but you only have 21 days.

Should you prove successful with the arbiter, the charge will be dropped. However, if you lose again, you will need to pay up or else risk being taken to the small claims court.  

“I checked the details – and won”

Julien Speed, a PR manager from Kent, received two tickets from Highview Parking after a trip to Tesco, with fines totalling £140. So he took action. He explains: “I took a two-pronged approach of challenging Highview on the grounds of technicalities, and complaining to Tesco about poor customer relations.”

He pointed out to Highview that a sign at the car park entrance advertises up to two hours of free parking when at least £5 is spent in store, and that both conditions were met. Julien also noted that the charge notice arrived a whopping 23 days after the alleged offence, when the official guidance detailed under the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 points out that it should arrive within a fortnight when no windscreen ticket has been issued.

“I’m pleased to say that both companies wrote to me separately, cancelling both tickets,” he adds.
