The people of Kirkwall, in the Orkney Islands, have the highest credit scores in the country, according to analysis of 10 million credit reports from across the UK. The analysis by Clearscore, which provides free access to credit data held by Equifax, found that average credit scores in Kirkwall were 454, just shy of an ‘excellent’ score, defined as 467 or higher. Outside Kirkwall, the highest rated borrowers are in Lerwick, in the Shetland Isles, with average scores of 453 and then Exeter and Bath, where typical residents had scores of 445. At the other end of the spectrum, South East London, East London and Southall have the three lowest scores in the country: of 361, 362 and 370 respectively. According to ClearScore, scores of above 420 are good, while scores of 366 or less are low and a cause for concern for lenders. The average credit score in the UK is 361. Justin Basini, ClearScore founder and CEO, commented: “This map clearly shows that credit scores vary wildly across the country. And whilst where you live doesn’t determine your personal credit score, it’s important to remember that lenders may use ‘postcode profiling’ as an overall indication of the risk associated with a particular area. “If you have an excellent personal credit score then you should have no problem successfully applying for credit, even if the average for your postcode is low. But those with a low score who also live in an area with a lower average could face greater scrutiny and be held back.
