Tesco ponders axing 5p carrier bags

Tesco is running a trial which could see the removal of 5p carrier bags from its stores, with customers only able to purchase a 10p “bag for life”.

All major retailers in England were forced to introduce a 5p carrier bag charge in October 2015, following similar rules being introduced in the rest of the UK. This was intended to cut usage of disposable bags and reduce waste.

The Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs estimates carrier bag usage dropped by 85% following the changes.

Now Tesco is considering going one step further by removing all 5p bags from a number of shops on a trial basis. Instead, customers will need to purchase a thicker 10p bag if they forget to bring one with them.

This trial is currently running at shops in Aberdeen, Dundee and Norwich for 10 weeks.

Tesco’s online delivery service will continue to use single use carrier bags, although customers do have the option of receiving a “bagless” delivery.

The supermarket says it runs a wide range of trials each year to see how it can reduce waste and service customers better.

A Tesco spokesperson says: “We are carrying out a short trial in a few stores to look at the impact on bag usage if we remove single use carrier bags.

“In these stores customers who need a bag can still buy a Bag for Life which they can reuse.”
