Happy holidays. Here’s a job.
Big box retailers aren’t dead yet. Not by a long shot. To prepare for the holiday season, they’re serving up almost a half-million jobs.
Although some economic indicators signal a weakening economy, the labor market remains tight. And that’s a good thing for job seekers.
Evan Armstrong, vice president of the Retail Industry Leaders Association, told The Penny Hoarder that filling such a massive amount of job openings — especially seasonal part-time job openings — is the retail industry’s current biggest hurdle. The RILA represents the nation’s largest brands, including Costco, Target and Walmart.
When there is such a large amount of job openings, retailers compete with each other to recruit new workers, and that often translates into higher wages and better benefits.
Here’s how to cash in on that holiday conundrum.
Top Employers Filling Seasonal Jobs En Masse
Several big-name employers are hiring for seasonal part-time jobs in big numbers. Full-time positions are available too, and some employers may want you to stick around much longer than the holiday season.
Target – 130,000 Seasonal Jobs
Target leads the pack in job openings this holiday season. Positions are available at more than 1,800 retail stores and 39 distribution centers. The vast majority of the positions, around 125,000, are at retail locations. Distribution centers plan to hire roughly 8,000 new employees.
Target wages start at $13 an hour. All hourly workers are eligible for 10% store-wide discounts and an additional 20% discount on fruits and vegetables, plus bonus pay for working on Thanksgiving or Christmas.
To land a job, apply on Target’s career website or at any Target location during its upcoming seasonal hiring events, Oct. 11 to 13 and Nov. 2 and 3 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
UPS – 100,000 Seasonal Jobs
Here’s your chance to don the iconic Pullman Brown uniform.
During the holiday season, UPS says daily deliveries spike up to 40 million, which means they need a lot of help ensuring all those holiday gifts arrive on time.
Delivery driver, package handler and store-front positions are available. Delivery drivers must have a valid driver’s license with no at-fault collisions in the last three years plus no moving violations over the past year. Most positions require the ability to lift heavy loads.
According to UPS, 35% of their seasonal package handlers eventually moved to full-time positions and roughly one-third of all their employees started in a seasonal position. Seasonal hires are also eligible for tuition assistance, up to $1,300 over three months, depending on location.

Kohl’s – 90,000 Seasonal Jobs
On Oct. 5, Kohl’s plans to kick off its seasonal hiring with an in-store hiring event. More than 1,100 Kohl’s retail locations are participating, and the company plans to hire approximately 5,000 seasonal workers on that day alone.
For the remaining 85,000 jobs, you can apply through Kohl’s seasonal jobs portal. Jobs at retail stores and distribution centers are available. Retail employees receive a 15% Kohl’s discount, and all seasonal workers are paid weekly.
Kohl’s employees who work 30 hours or more per week are eligible for 401(k) and health benefits.

Amazon – 50,000+ Permanent and Seasonal Jobs
Amazon has been hiring fewer seasonal workers the past few seasons. Last year, it hired 100,000 in one fell swoop, and that was 20,000 fewer than 2017.
This year, Amazon is lumping permanent and high-level jobs into the mix through its first ever “Career Day,” a bid to seek applicants for 30,000 permanent positions. Of those, about 13,000 are available in Washington state only. While the Career Day event was Sept. 17, thousands of nationwide positions are still available.
All workers are eligible for a new program called Upskilling 2025. Amazon spent $700 million on the initiative to help employees learn new skills in in-demand fields.
The company says it plans to have a second hiring push in the coming weeks for “tens of thousands of seasonal roles for its operations network.” Wages start at $15 an hour. For more information and updates on seasonal delivery gigs, visit Amazon’s seasonal jobs portal.
Gap Inc. – 30,000 Seasonal Jobs
Gap Inc. brand stores, including Gap, Janie and Jack, Banana Republic, Athleta and all brand outlets are holding a walk-in hiring event for seasonal part-time jobs on Oct. 5 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. During those same times, several Gap call centers and distribution centers are holding similar walk-in events in various states.
Gap Inc. is accepting applications through its seasonal jobs portal, and the company encourages those planning to attend an in-person event to apply online beforehand.
Seasonal employees are eligible for a 50% discount at Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic stores, a 30% discount at outlet stores and a 25% discount at Athleta.
Last year, Gap Inc. hired 90,000 seasonal employees in preparation for the holiday season. A Gap spokesperson told The Penny Hoarder that the company is taking a different approach this year to offer seasonal workers additional hours.
The company’s career page says there is an “unlimited potential for career advancement (even after the holidays).”
Michael’s – 15,000 Seasonal Jobs
Michael’s, an arts and crafts retailer in 49 states and Canada, is filling an estimated 15,000 seasonal part-time jobs, and these positions have high growth potential.
According to a Michael’s press release, more than 40% of last year’s seasonal employees transitioned into full-time positions. Seasonal workers are also eligible for a 30% discount.
Available job openings include roles at retail locations and distribution centers. Michael’s encourages all candidates to apply online.
Michael’s hired 15,000 workers last holiday season.
