Deciding which home service provider to choose can be tough. With a myriad of deals and offers available, it is often hard to pick apart which product offers best value.

That is why each year Moneywise asks you, the readers, to tell us about the top home services providers in the country.

The Home Finances Awards are designed to help you to decide on a whole range of household services, from broadband and mobiles to energy suppliers and supermarkets.

This year, with a phenomenal 10,000 respondents to our survey, there are some clear winners that deserve a pat on the back.

A big thank you to all those who voted – here are the firms that you picked as the best providers in the UK in 2018.

Broadband

There are some great broadband deals out there for consumers, as increasing competition means providers are looking to outdo each other on price.

However, the quality of your broadband service is often dependent on where you live, with many people in rural areas complaining about slow speeds.

Remember, if you’re unhappy with your broadband provider it’s easier to switch than ever before.

Our research shows that while most Moneywise readers are happy with their broadband provider, one in five says they are likely to switch in the next year.

We found that the main reasons people switch is for faster broadband speed, better customer service and a cheaper deal.

This year, BT was rated the best broadband provider.

BT proved a popular choice for readers living in the countryside due to its excellent connection in rural areas. It also scored highly for speed and reliability.

Runner-up was Virgin Media, which scored highly with our readers in towns and cities where the infrastructure is in place for it to deliver fibre broadband.

Readers voted Plusnet the best value broadband service for the fifth year in a row. O2 was highly commended in this category.

Paid-for TV

Despite the challenge from streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon, paid-for TV still remains hugely popular in the UK.

Sky managed to retain its top spot as most recommended brand for the third year running, pushing Virgin Media into second place.

Moneywise readers also voted Sky their favourite provider in the best value-for-money category, with BT close behind in second place.

Sky has stepped up its investment in original content in recent years with a raft of new programming. As well as being the go-to channel for sporting coverage, the broadcasting giant also offers a host of movie and lifestyle channels and is home to some of the biggest American imports such as Game of Thrones.

Video on demand

Best value for money video on demand
Winner Netflix
Highly commended: Amazon Prime

As lifestyles become more hectic and viewing habits change, more and more people are switching off terrestrial TV and looking towards on-demand video services.

Netflix once again took top honours in the video on demand category, despite strong competition from rival Amazon, which had to settle for second spot.

Our readers scored the streaming service highly for the range of programmes on offer compared to other streaming services.

Netflix continues to invest in original programming and is home to popular series such as Stranger Things and The Crown, and TV favourites such as Friends.

Home Entertainment Bundles

Best value for money
WinnerTalkTalk
Highly commended: Plusnet

An increasing number of providers are offering packages that bundle your broadband, TV and phone contract together.

Our research shows that 84% of Moneywise readers now opt for a bundle deal, highlighting their popularity.

The biggest reason to sign up to bundles is that you can save money. However, remember that discounts on bundled services don’t last forever and can go up once you renew your contract, so it’s a good idea to give your provider a call to try haggling down the price.

Another reason to sign up is the convenience, as you only have to pay one bill a month rather than lots of individual ones. It also means you only have to deal with one company for customer service, which makes things a lot easier.

Virgin came out on top for the second year in a row, thanks to its high-speed broadband and its range of TV options that allow you to pick and choose from Sky and BT. The runner-up in this category was Sky.

TalkTalk scooped the top prize for the best value-for-money home entertainment bundles, according to our readers, beating Plusnet into second place.
