With the market’s attention squarely focused on the Fed and China there are some important developments taking this place in Syria. Russia has quietly stepped up support for Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, sending tanks, ammunition and possibly constructing a new airfield. Syria has long been Moscow’s main ally in the Middle East, home to its only naval base on the Mediterranean, and the only country through which Russia can extend its influence in the region. It’s also home to hundreds of thousands of migrants fleeing for Europe after a three year civil war killed 191,000 of their countrymen.
